Well, the legalization of discrimination amendment to the Constitution failed.  Not a time to rejoice though; there's still a lot more work to be done.

There have been some interesting items in the news feeds today.

Gay Marriage Amendment:  As expected, the fundie Republican amendment to the Constitution to ban recognition of nontraditional relationships has been killed by the Senate.  I'm glad that they didn't even muster 50 votes, but there was one gentleman away (accompanying the President somewhere, if I remember the article correctly.)  The problem is that the Nazis are trying to use this as a wedge vote so that their Gauleit--I mean pastors can get their sheep out to vote according to their whims in November.  The House of Representatives will take up the issue next month, and even though the amendment will go nowhere without Senate approval, the Nazis will make plenty of noise about it.  *reaches for the antacid*

There's an interesting OpEd piece in the Los Angeles Times today, commenting that while Dubya has made many statements about the "sanctity of marriage", he's never said "gay marriage."  The commentator brings up Bush's address to his fundie faithful, where he said (I'm cutting and pasting this) "As this debate goes forward, we must remember that every American deserves to be treated with tolerance, respect and dignity. All of us have a duty to conduct this discussion with civility and decency toward one another, and all people deserve to have their voices heard."  The problem is, he doesn't LET our voices be heard.  He's sticking his head in the sand like a fucking ostrich hoping that we will Go Away.  I don't think it's that easy.  (David Link, "He dares not speak its name", Los Angeles Times, 6/7/06.)

Macy's in Boston had placed a display in their display windows to commemmorate gay pride week.  The display had two male mannequins (one wearing the Rainbow Flag draped around its waist) and a listing of Pride events.  A fundaNazi group screamed about it, posted photographs on its website, and had their minions yell loudly about a mannequin in a "skirt."  Macy's caved and took it down.  Considering that Macy's is transforming Marshall Field's this fall, can we expect such treatment?  *shrugs*  It's not as if I shop there anyways, it's more impetus to shop at Carson's instead.  ("Macy's removes gay pride display", AP via Yahoo.)

And finally, everyone's favorite foul-mouthed closeted lipstick lesbian, Ann Coulter, is out with another vitriolic tirade.  Among other things, she has referred to a group of September 11 widows as "The WItches of East Brunswick", claiming that they are milking their husbands deaths for all they're worth and also said, "She criticized them for making a campaign advertisement for Democratic presidential candidate Sen. John Kerry in 2004, and added: 'By the way, how do we know their husbands weren't planning to divorce these harpies? Now that their shelf life is dwindling, they'd better hurry up and appear in Playboy.'"  Sounds like this woman is the harpy; she needs to not only clean herself out (with drain cleaner) and apologize to these women.  I hope they sue her for slander and take every penny.  There's NO call for that. ("Coulter calls 9/11 widows 'witches'", Reuters via Yahoo.)
